MEDIA WORK

Here you will find examples of my media work, most of which revolve around the analysis of contemporary television texts. These research projects use different secondary sources in order to explain the methodologies and theories used in order to analyse the different television texts. The majority of these research projects focus on how contemporary television addresses different social contexts such as race, gender and politics. All of the work below I thoroughly enjoyed doing and I believe they portray my passion for television as well as demonstrating the different ways in which television can be studied.

To what extent does the Netflix original film, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, use discourse in attempt to form an emotional and affective response from the viewer?

This discourse analysis discusses Netflix original content and the emotional and affective response it generates from the audience. It considers how the stereotypes and representations conveyed in a media text are interpreted by the audience. The literature review works in order to differentiate between between affect and emotion. The film targets a young audience, the analysis therefore considers the repercussions of the discourses embedded within film. As Netflix is a modern, contemporary platform, the article therefore addresses the influence the platform has on its audience.

How do female characters in ‘The Marvellous Mrs Maisel’ offer a challenge to stereotypical traditional femininity and what does this challenge tell us about gender roles during the 1950’s?

This analysis addresses issues of gender stereotypes and gender roles in the 1950's. The issues raised within The Marvellous Mrs Maisel are decoded into the discourse in order to challenge stereotypical femininity. The discourses used to convey this are used by both male and female characters and are identified and evaluated in the analysis. The 1950's society and the stereotypes represented can be compared to modern society and this is considered in the analysis of this research.

What quality discourses are evident in HBO’s ‘Game of Thrones’?

This discourse analysis addresses and explores the deeper contextual meanings that are conveyed in the text. Despite being set in an alternate universe of magic and dragons, Game of Thrones uses the setting to address issues of gender and race. The universe creates it's own gender roles and issues of race in order to demonstrate and intensify issues parallel to western society. These ideas embedded into the text are decoded in the analysis through discourse. This report includes a literature review in order to thoroughly conceptualise the discourses that are being represented in HBO's Game of Thrones.

What discourses of gender and class diversity are constructed in the BBCs Peaky Blinders? How can these discourses be considered in relation to public service broadcasting and the BBC’s public purposes?

This research project focuses on how the BBC's Peaky Blinders is a public service broadcast when looking at how it abides by the BBC's public purposes as well as Ofcom's public service purposes. In order to analyse how these public purposes are embedded into the text I conducted a discourse analysis in order to identify and evaluate how social contexts and issues are discussed through discourse. This research identified how Peaky Blinders is evidently a public service broadcast and why this is important for the audience.

What is popular culture?

This essay focuses on defining popular culture in terms of how it represents race in the media. In order to make this essay more specific I used an episode of Family Guy in order to put into perspective how it is that race is represented through popular culture.
